CHAPTER 12
On her drive home Mina kept thinking about Linda’s remarks regarding Roger. Did she really have a thing for the veterinarian? How come Linda had never mentioned it before? Same old story, we want someone who wants someone else. Next time she saw Linda she would talk to her about it, but not during a happy hour. And she never phoned Gino! But if she didn’t pay attention to her driving she was bound to get in trouble, so Mina pushed all the thoughts from her mind.
She went through the open gate like a maniac, and rushed from the garage into the house without stopping by the cottage to say hello to Millie and the cats. She unbuttoned her shirt while walking upstairs, and kicked off her high heels, hurrying. The phone rang while Mina was still working on her shirt’s cuffs. She grabbed the receiver off the phone on her nightstand.
“Hello.”
“Ciao, Mina, come va? Tutto bene?”
“Gino, hello, yes, all is well. I was about to call you.”
“Good, I’m listening.”
“Listening? No, no, I have questions.”
“So do I. Should I go first since I called you?”
That was a strange thing to say. “I guess. What’s up?”
“Exactly.”
“Exactly what?”
“What are you and Diego up to?”
Aria jumped on the bed and rubbed against Mina, waiting to be greeted.
“Diego? I don’t know where you get your information from, but I have no idea what you're talking about.” Good, Mina. It's none of his business. “On a different subject I hear you’re getting a permanent job here in California?”
“That’s what I thought, until calls came in from Italy inquiring about you and you know who.”
“You know who? What? We can’t call him by his name? What’s going on?”
“Apparently your behavior is interfering with his—relationship with Miss Veggos.”
“That bitch?”
“Ah. You see? I knew it. What’s wrong with you two?! You’re like moths to a flame, and one is always getting burned. And this time your silly little games are costing me my future and my career in America.”
What? She couldn’t believe it. She was just too frustrated to even argue, and she had a strong feeling that Gino had absolutely no clue regarding Houdini, Zeus, Delia and the kidnappers. So where the hell was he getting all that garbage from? Although she had to admit that the moth and the flame was not a bad metaphor. She found herself smiling. Who’s the moth, and who’s the flame this time around, she wondered?
“Mina, are you there?”
Gino, she almost forgot. “I’m here, and it’s not what you think. I bumped into Diego again by pure—accident. He was with De Fiore when he stopped by. That’s it, end of story.” Sort of. “Where will you be working?”
“De Fiore? You mean the Asian detective with the Italian last name?”
“Ginoooo. If you’re going to live in the States you need to modernize your language. De Fiore is a U.S. citizen, and the Italian last name he got from his step-dad who adopted him. Although I assume his ancestors came from Asia.
